Local man's weight loss to be featured in national magazine

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - "I knew I was in a zone of either a heart attack, a stroke or expiring," says James Young.

Just three years ago he was 270 pounds. He had a lot of unhealthy habits. He was a heavy drinker and smoker and he loved food, but he knew something was wrong.

"I ignored being out of breath. I ignored the weight gain; that was my issue. I was bloated. It wasn't necessarily being obese. So, I was winded, I had an excessive cough as well as gout," says Young.

Young saw his primary doctor in the nick of time. His heart was functioning at 30 percent.

He was instantly admitted to Beaumont Hospital and diagnosed with congestive heart failure, a condition where the heart can't pump enough blood to the body.

"They had me on diuretic pills and then from that point, obviously, that purged the fluid out of my system which ultimately allowed me to lose weight, and from that point that's when I really began to feel 100 percent better," he says.

Most of the weight he was carrying was due to fluid retention. He dropped 75 pounds almost instantly.

That sudden weight loss sparked a lifestyle change in Young. He didn't know it at the time but the journey he was starting would catch the attention of a national magazine.

"I just started walking, just simply walking, and then that progressed into me actually jogging and doing more distance," Young says.

Young eventually gave up smoking and drinking, fast food and carbonated drinks.

Three years after his diagnosis, Young is a healthy man weighing 184 pounds.

His journey will be featured in July's Ebony magazine.

Young has become an advocate for people struggling with weight loss. He says if he can do it so can you.

He says, "They need to examine their lifestyle. How important is their life to them? And as I said earlier ... do you love your habits more than you love yourself?"
