Chicago determined not to lose Obama library bid

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Chicago is Barack Obama's hometown, the mayor is his former chief of staff, and it's where the nation's first black president earned his political chops.

But the city is leaving nothing to chance in its push to host the Obama Presidential Library.

Monday is the deadline for initial proposals, and five separate Chicago bids are being submitted by universities, a community organization and a real estate developer.

Despite some one-upmanship among them, all agree the city can't afford to lose out to rival offers from New York City and Hawaii.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is not picking a favorite yet, but he's making clear he would like to see the library on the South Side, where he says it would have the most potential to spur development and jobs.
