In a digital world, libraries work to attract more visitors

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - The digital age might have been a threat to the old fashioned library, but as it turns out, libraries are more popular than ever!

With most households having computers, smartphones and tablets, it is a struggle to attract visitors. The American Library Association found people who use technology are more likely to use the library.

By featuring more digital content and more modern building designs, libraries are working hard to draw people back in.

For example, The Downers Grove Library is undergoing a $2.6 million transformation to redesign their circulation area nd expand their children's section. That area will soon include an adorable mouse house that resembles a piece of cheese. The Downers Grove Library is still open during construction. They say they have not suffered in attendance at all.

If you walk into the Fountaindale Library, you may not be able to tell you are inside a library at all! The facility is a place residents come to learn to crochet, cook, and more.

"We designed the library around the theme of being in the park. We have a wonderful green roof," an employee at the Bolingbrook said.

He went on to say the library offers an opportunity for patrons to transform their lives and make connections with people in the community.

Libraries are doing what they can to appeal to people who use technology. Now, libraries are not only places to check out a book, they are marketing themselves as a place to hold business meetings with information resources, devices and free wifi. They want to be a place for all ages.

The Chicago Library was recently rated the best urban library in the country for its use of social media, forward thinking and being responsive to diverse communities.

The best part about the library is in a world where everything costs money, it's still free!
