Cooking with Corey: Mr. Beef is a Chicago classic

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - FOX 32's first 'Cooking With Corey' adventure takes us to a Chicago classic in the River North neighborhood.

It's nothing fancy, but it's where those in the know go for their italian Beef - Mr. Beef!

It all starts with massive, juicy hunks of italian beef roasted to perfections for about four hours. Next, the beef is trimmed.

"There's not a lot of beef stands that do this," Joe, the owner of Mr. Beef said.

Only after the beef cools for 14 or 15 hours is it ready to be sliced.

"If you ever go to some places and it is cringley, that means it has been sitting in the gravy too long," Joe said.

The next stop is the steam table, where the meat meets the grease!

In other words, when you come to Mr. Beef, it really is all about the beef.

It's a place everybody has been, including Jay Leno. Employees say Leno used to eat there when he was doing standup.

"His hair would be all messed up and we would feed him. We kind of felt sorry for him, you know?" Joe said.

Leno helped put Mr. Beef on the map. And so did Joe Motegna, known for his roles in Godfather 3 and Criminal Minds. Born on the West Side and later in Cicero, Montegna loves nothing more than coming home - a Chicago guy through and through.

If you haven't been to Mr. Beef, it's a true Chicago joint and experience.
