What does it take to sound like a Chicagoan?

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Whether it’s that short “A" sound or replacing “TH” with “D,” tourists from around the world want to know, "What does it take to sound like you’re from Chicago?"

A wiki-how article that’s being spread around social media broke down the basics. But FOX 32 went to the expert, Jason Martin, the clinical assistant professor of voice and dialect at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

It turns out, to master that true Chicago sound you start extreme and work your way back. While that may work for comedy, Martin teaches his actors around Chicago to learn how to pull back.

Using physical exercises, you can learn to mold your vowels to any region in the country.

But the ultimate secret to master the accent comes not from faking it at all.

It’s not an SNL skit or a bit for a movie, it’s the sound of Chicago - It’s what makes us who we are.
