CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A disturbing discovery was made at a suburban park playground: Vandals put screws in a children's slide.

On Wednesday, police were stepping up patrols. The vandalism was discovered a few days ago on two tall rocket slides. The good news is that, according to police, there was only one report of minor injuries.

According to the Park District Superintendent, one slide had eight drywall screws drilled into the last segment where the kids exit the slide, and the other rocket slide had two. The vandals then broke off the screw heads, leaving sharp jagged pieces of metal sticking out; which posed a real hazard.

Luckily, Park District employees quickly removed the screws from the slides.

Parents couldn't believe someone would so this. They are now being told to check the slide before their children get in.

“I think you have to be a pretty sick individual to do such thing, makes me kind of wonder who would do such a thing you know,” said Jonathan Lyman.

John Seplak, a father, chimed in, “I'm not too concerned, it's disturbing that somebody would do something like this.”

The Park District Superintendent wonders if this might be a copycat crime after razor blades were left at a park in East Moline back in March. They are now taking precautions to protect kids’ safety.

“We normally inspect our parks on a weekly basis, but in light of this incident, we have now started to inspect this park every single day,” said Superintendent of Parks Joel Craig.

“I think it's very selfish,” said Ava Cusack. She also said she is “kinda” worried about going down the slides now.

Police are investigating whether or not they have a copycat on their hands. A few months ago, a 2-year-old was cut with razor blades when they found those glued to some monkey bars in East Moline.

Oak Lawn police are stepping up patrols. They say they are still searching the person or people responsible for the crime. are asking anyone with information about who might be responsible to contact them.
