CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Police and school officials are investigating the theft of 59 MacBook Air laptop computers from a storage closet at a northwest suburban high school, Pioneer Press is reporting.

Officials are reviewing internal security and surveillance videos, District 220 said in a statement. Barrington High School staff members noticed the computers missing on June 3.

The missing laptops, which have a retail value of $59,000, were insured, officials said, and the cost to replace them will total $2,500.

The MacBook Airs were part of a pilot program for the district’s One to World initiative to equip all middle and high school students with portable electronic devices. The devices kept in the storage closet were intended to be used as loaners for high school students in the event their primary devices were not working, officials said.

The missing laptops were not used during the 2013-14 school year and were still in their original packaging.

District officials said the investigation is still in its preliminary stages.
