Man goes 31 days without spending money, gives savings to charity

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

For 31 days, Kevin Zarlengo did a lot of things. He cleaned houses, walked dogs and rode a bike.

He did these things because, for one month, there’s one thing he didn’t do: He didn’t spend a dime!

It’s a pretty basic concept – saving money by just not spending it. Though, as we all know, that’s easier said than done.

So FOX 32's Jake Hamilton did what any good reporter would do. He invited him over to his apartment and put him to work with the promise of free food.

By not spending, Kevin was able to give more than $3,400 to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

From riding bikes around the entire city to babysitting, Kevin did whatever it took to save pennies and exchange services for food. But it nearly all came crashing down when his body stopped cooperating.

And not only does Kevin plan to do it all over again, he also plans to write down his experiences for a potential book. But in the end, he was amazed at what he realized.

It’s an amazing achievement for sure, one worthy of recognition and reward. As he wrapped up cleaning Jake's apartment, a reward is just what he got.
