MOKENA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An elderly married couple was killed and a police officer was injured in a house fire in south suburban Mokena early Wednesday, fire officials said.

Emergency crews were called to a fire in the 19600 block of Catalpa Road at 3:21 a.m., Frankfort Fire Protection District Chief Jim Grady said. The first crews arrived at the scene by 3:24 a.m.

Edwin L. Pauls, 81, and Arline R. Pauls, 80, were removed from the burning home and pronounce dead at the scene at 4:48 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

Initial indications are that both suffered smoke inhalation, according to the coroner’s office, though final cause and manner and of death are pending further testing and police reports.

A Mokena police officer who tried to enter the home through a rear door before firefighters arrived was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox to be treated for smoke inhalation, Grady said.

According to Grady, the house was a “total loss” after the blaze.

While the cause remains under investigation, the fire did not appear to be suspicious, Grady said. The Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating.
