CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was killed and at least four other people--including a 4-year-old boy--were wounded in shootings across the city Tuesday.

The fatal shooting happened just after 3 p.m. in the South Side Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Brett Ewing, 26, and the 4-year-old boy were in a vehicle in the 200 block of West 72nd Street when someone got out of another nearby vehicle and opened fire, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. A woman drove both to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, a hospital spokesman said.

Ewing, of the 6800 block of South Perry Avenue, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transferred in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead at 6:37 p.m., authorities said.

The boy suffered a “minor” wound to the wrist and was sent to University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital in “stable” condition, police and hospital officials said.

A police source said the man--who previously had been arrested 24 times resulting in six convictions, including two for possessing an illegal firearm--was the shooter’s intended target.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood on the South Side. A 25-year-old man was walking in the 4100 block of South Indiana Avenue when he passed a group of people and got into an argument with someone who then shot him in the arm, police said. A friend took him to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition.

About 20 minutes earlier, a man was shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. The 40-year-old told officers he was walking about 8:10 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Keeler Avenue when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and fired shots at him, police said. He was struck once in the hand and he took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

The day’s first shooting happened about 11:40 a.m. in Logan Square on the Northwest Side, where a 20-year-old man was shot in the back during another possible drive-by attack in the 2400 block of North Lawndale Avenue, police said. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition.

Additionally, a Chicago Police officer shot a man about 11:45 p.m. in the Wicker Park neighborhood. The man, thought to be in his 20s, had crashed an SUV into several parked vehicles in the 1500 block of North Hoyne Avenue and accelerated his car toward officers when an officer shot him, police said. The driver was taken to Stroger in good condition, a police union spokesman said.
