Semi driver cited after Dan Ryan crash

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A semi driver has been cited after his Freightliner crashed into a bus and another semi truck on the Dan Ryan Expressway, halting traffic for three hours during the Tuesday evening commute.

The crash happened in the outbound lanes of I-94 near 95th Street about 3:10 p.m., when a Red 2001 Freightliner semi lost control and hit a concrete wall to the right of the roadway, State Police said in a release.

The driver of the Freightliner, 71-year-old Kenneth J. Dunn of Chicago, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, unsafe equipment, and spilling a load on a highway, according to state police.

The impact tore off the semi’s trailer, which hit a white full-sized school bus transporting special needs adults to a facility, according to police and Fire Media Affairs Chief Larry Langford.

The bus then veered to the left and stuck another semi, a white 2001 Freightliner, which ran off the roadway to the left and hit a concrete barrier, police said.

No one was seriously injured, but emergency crews called for about a dozen ambulances to take 37 people from the bus to hospitals for observation, Langford said.

All of them are in fair or good condition, Langford said.

The driver of the first semi was briefly trapped inside the truck, but was not seriously injured and refused medical attention, Langford said.

All outbound lanes were shut down to traffic until 6:20 p.m. as crews cleaned up paper debris from the crash that covered the roadway, state police said.
