WILMINGTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

One man died and three others made it to safety after a canoe overturned late Tuesday in the Kankakee River in southwest suburban Wilmington.

Four men were onboard the canoe in the Des Plaines Conservation Area when it overturned in the river about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to Illinois Department of Natural Resources spokesman Chris Young.

Three of the men were able to swim to shore, he said.

The fourth, 20-year-old Dean Fredericks, was pulled from the river by rescue divers and pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office. An autopsy found the preliminary cause of death was drowning, the coroner’s office said.
