CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Meet Cruz - The 3-year-old sea lion has been an inhabitant of the Shedd Aquarium for the past year and a half, melting the hearts of everyone he meets.

But his happy life here in Chicago wasn’t always the case. After being found on a beach in California, it was discovered that Cruz is blind.

And the fault lies in the hands of humans.

Madelynn Hettiger is the supervisor of marine animals at the Shedd Aquarium. While her team has had an incredible hand in Cruz’s rehabilitation, this amazing sea lion is doing plenty of the hard work himself.

And while, chances are, you won’t find a sea lion on the beaches of Chicago any time soon, Hettiger has some helpful tips for anyone who comes across an injured animal.

But for now, Chicago will remain home to Cruz.
