CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

At least one man was critically injured and 13 others were in need of shelter early Wednesday after a fire broke out at a Chicago Lawn neighborhood apartment building on the Southwest Side.

Rescue crews responded to the blaze about 1 a.m. in the 6100 block of South Richmond Street, said police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

A 43-year-old man was injured in the fire and taken in “extremely” critical to Holy Cross Hospital, Fire Media Affairs Chief Larry Langford said.

The man suffered second-degree burns and paramedics were performing CPR while he was en route to the hospital, Langford said.

At least 13 others were displaced after their homes were rendered uninhabitable, Gaines said.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known as fire officials investigate.
