Cops: Fake phone company reps tried to talk their way into Naperville bank

Posted: Updated:
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Two people pretending to be from a phone company tried to talk their way into a bank’s computer room last week in west suburban Naperville.

A man and a woman walked into the bank May 28, and said they had an appointment to convert the telephone lines there from an old system to a new system, Naperville police said in a statement.

They tried to gain entry to a room containing telephone lines and computer equipment, but were denied after the bank verified they were not with the telephone carrier they said they were with, police said.

Both were well-dressed, and neither was carrying any paperwork, tools or equipment, police said.

The man is described as white, between 25 and 35, about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10, with an average build and dark wavy or curly hair, police said. He had no facial hair and was wearing a dark suit coat, dark dress slacks, a white dress shirt and a white tie.

The woman with him is described as a black woman in her 30s, about 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-6, with an average build, relaxed dark hair and a medium complexion, police said. She was wearing a business suit, blouse and low heels and carried a Coach purse.

Police are reminding local businesses to verify the legitimacy of anyone trying to gain access to protected areas.

Anyone who saw a similar incident or has any information on what happened is asked to call Naperville Police at (630) 420-6666 or Crime Stoppers at (630) 420-6006.

Authorities did not release the name or address of the bank where the incident happened.
