CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A heartbreaking story out of New York City has close ties to Chicago.

FOX 32 News has learned a 6-year-old boy who was stabbed and killed inside an apartment building elevator in Brooklyn was the cousin of the Chicago Bulls player Taj Gibson.

Prince Joshua Avitto was attacked inside the elevator Sunday night. A second child was critically wounded in the attack.

Police officials in New York are still looking for the man believed to have stabbed the two boys. Officers believe the suspect in the attack is also responsible for the murder of an 18-year-old woman.

To remember his cousin, Gibson posted an image of him on Instagram Monday night with a caption that read, "They killed my lil super man. #rippj only two more weeks until your 7 birthday. Tears forever this can't be real life #foreversuperman #babycuzz."

New York City's housing authority says it will work to expedite security upgrades following the stabbing death of the 6-year-old.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says an "unacceptable bureaucracy" led to the lack of security cameras in Brooklyn's Boulevard Houses. De Blasio on Tuesday criticized the housing authority for not spending the $27 million available in its budget for security improvements such as cameras.
