Unique quilt being sewn to honor all Chicago Police Officers

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There is a saying among those in law enforcement that they are cut from the same cloth. Now, there is a group of women who are taking pieces of clothing from officer’s uniforms and turning them into a patchwork of their lives.

A group of women are becoming architects of history, creating a quilt to remember those who swore to serve and protect the city of Chicago.

“There is something special about something made by loving hands,” said Peta Minerof-Bartos, Vice President of Chicago Master Quilt Guild.

Every single piece of fabric comes from the donated shirts of Chicago police officers, including both active duty and retired. Some officers are still living and others shirts come from the families of the fallen.

“It feels great. It shows we're cut from the same cloth, the same fabric,” said Chris Schenk of the Police Memorial Foundation.

To retired officer Marla Margelewski, it's very personal.

“It’s one way to honor those who gave, and honoring those who are giving…honoring the families,” Margelewski said.

Margelewski is also a quilter and she wanted to help tell the story of Chicago’s finest through patchwork.

“There are several different layouts you can use, but the one we seem to gravitate to is the one that resembles the Chicago flag,” a quilter added.

Every patch and each piece of fabric from uniforms is used. Even the buttons will be packaged as souvenirs, because they were touched daily by an officer who suited up for duty.

“The button is meant to symbolize that hard work and effort on a daily basis, and it is kind of the glue that holds that shirt together,” said Cynthia Shuman of the 18th District.

“There are people, men and women, behind those shirts and they put their lives on the line every day,” said organizer Aileen Robinson.

And 6 months from now, when the quilts finished, it will be a king sized example of a special fabric that binds the men and women in blue.
