CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A young boy found wandering alone Friday morning on a sidewalk in the South Side Englewood neighborhood has been identified and placed with family friends.

Citizens notified police after they found the boy, thought to be between 20 and 24 months old, about 9:45 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Stewart Avenue, police said.

Police said the child was dropped off on the curb by a male driving a beige vehicle.

The boy was cleanly dressed and showed no apparent signs of trauma, but was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center for examination, police said.

He has since been identified and placed with a family friend, police News Affairs Officer Stacey Cooper said. The state Department of Child and Family Services has initiated a safety plan in the case.

The investigation continues, and no one is in police custody Friday evening, Cooper said.
