Illinois same-sex marriage law kicks in this weekend

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - The marriage industry in Illinois will be booming this weekend as the state's same-sex marriage law kicks in. That change will have a huge impact on business in the state.

Many people who were in civil unions, will be transferring to marriage on June 1. Lisa Madigan told FOX 32 News the government will support the marriages.

"There is really no good legal argument in defense of why you can't issue those marriage certificates," Madigan said.

Gay couples sat it has been a long road.

"It brings out equal rights for us. We have the same rights and the same equality as regular married couples. So when it comes to being able to make medical decisions for each other, we don't have to go and have a piece of paper stating that this is who we are," one couple told FOX 32's Darlene Hill.

Darlene Hill also spoke with another couple from Texas who made the trip to Chicago to get married this weekend.

With more people in the state being able to get married, business at banquet halls and catering companies will be booming. The general manager of the Country Inn in Mount Prospect said they have seen more business for the summer months since same-sex marriage was declared a law in February.

"All around the spectrum, everyone is receiving business. We work with quite a few caterers and DJ's. It has been great," Paul Cantrell said.

Illinois is the fifteenth state to allow same-sex marriage.
