Police question person of interest after fatal hit-and-run in Bridgeport

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Police are questioning a “person of interest” after a bicyclist was struck and killed by a van Thursday night in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

The 59-year-old woman was riding her bike in the 2900 block of South Poplar Avenue about 5:30 p.m. when a vehicle struck her, police said. The driver did not stop and the vehicle kept going east.

Suai Xie, of the 400 block of West 28th Place, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she was pronounced dead at 6:08 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

An autopsy Friday found she died of multiple injuries from being hit by the van, and her death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner’s office said.

Police are questioning a person of interest in the case, but no charges have been filed as of Friday evening.
