Man charged with shooting elderly man in Morgan Park

A man was held at $900,000 bond after he was charged with shooting a 74-year-old man in the neck Tuesday afternoon in the Far South Side Morgan Park neighborhood.

Kent Smith, 21, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, according to Chicago Police.

He allegedly fired into an occupied vehicle about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 11200 block of South Throop Street, police sid.

The driver, a 74-year-old man, was shot in the neck and leg, and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in “stable” condition, police said. A passenger in the vehicle, an 18-year-old man, was not injured.

Police said the victim does not appear to be the intended target.

Smith, of the 8200 block of South Brandon Avenue, was ordered held on a $900,000 bond Thursday, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office website. He will next appear in court June 3.
