Townsend has pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the tournament so far, beating Alize Cornet, the 20th ranked player in the world. Townsend will now advance to the next round in a match that is expected to be played Friday at 11 a.m. Paris time.

Taylor's next match is versus another seeded opponent, no. 14 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. She is the youngest American to reach that stage at Roland Garros since Ashley Harkleroad in 2003.

Townsend describes the experience so far as "amazing."
