After more than a century, Zweifel Hardware is closing its doors

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Cities don’t just build themselves - they start with tools, materials and hardware.

For 128 years, the folks of Chicago got those at Zweifel Hardware. After more than a century of service, this local legacy is closing its doors forever.

Dave Zweifel is the owner of Zweifel Hardware.

Originally built in 1886 on Wentworth Avenue, it originally moved West to 25th Place in 1960. The store has been in his family for more than a century after his grandfather purchased it from his father-in-law.

And while it once rang up nearly a million dollars in annual sales, these days, the aisles remain pretty scarce.

Still, for Zweifel, the years have provided plenty of memorable moments.

And even though smaller businesses like Zweifel Hardware are moving out to make way for the bigger chains, Zweifel says that there’s still place in this world for the classic “mom and pop shop.”

The store will begin its final blowout liquidation sale later this summer.

But for now, the memories Zweifel Hardware has built over the years remain – and no matter how hard you try, you can never tear those down.
