Sting premiers new musical in Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Before he won 16 Grammys.... before he sold 100 million albums... before he was Sting, Gordon Sumner was a kid in the shipyards.

"The Last Ship," the new musical making its world debut in Chicago, was heavily inspired by Sting’s childhood growing up around the English shipyards.

FOX 32's Jake Hamilton sat down with the legendary rocker to discuss his history of pouring his heart and soul onto the page.

But that doesn’t mean his attempts to write a musical were met with open arms, Sting often submitted songs only to have them rejected - a feeling the legend isn’t exactly use to.

While "The Last Ship” may focus on Sting’s beginnings, it also focuses on the end. The musical features a union of shipbuilders, moments from losing their jobs, working together to build one final ship.

Jake Hamilton asked Sting, "if you knew you were getting out of this business, what’s the last thing you’d do?"

Sting said he would live everyday as if it were his last.

And what better way to live like that than premiering your new musical in Chicago?
