Neighbors speak out against Vinsetta Garage parking proposal

Posted: Updated:
A popular restaurant in Berkley is at the center of a battle over parking.

Neighbors of the auto-themed hot spot Vinsetta Garage spoke out against proposed parking plans for the restaurant. They said at the City Hall meeting Tuesday night they're fed up with restaurant patrons parking and causing traffic congestion on the side street.

The restaurant's owner, Curt Catallo, is working to buy four houses on the side street, tear them down and turn the area into an enclosed, manicured parking area.

The Charter One Bank recently ended an agreement that allowed restaurant patrons to park in its parking lot.

"We're looking to the community and the planning commission to tell us what they want to do. To this point we followed the master plan from 2007 as kind of our North Star but we're game for anything," says Catallo.

Residents claim Catallo hasn't lived up to his end of the deal about parking. Residents say their property values have already dropped due to the traffic chaos and congestion because of the restaurant, and knocking down houses and turning them into a parking lot will only make it worse.

The planning commission says they still have more questions before making a decision and will meet again in June.
