ELGIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man wanted for violating his parole crashed his car after refusing to pull over, killing a man and critically injuring a woman in northwest suburban Elgin Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Elgin police attempted to pull over Steven Luellen, 34, while he was driving a Nissan Maxima because he was wanted on a parole violation warrant about 5:10 p.m., police said in a statement.

Luellen refused to stop and started speeding east on Jefferson Street in Elgin, police said. He then blew a stop sign, and his car crashed in to a 2002 Mazda MPV that was headed northbound on Liberty Street, police said.

Officers did not attempt to stop the car after he sped away, police said.

The man driving the Mazda, thought to be in his 40s, was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, where he later died, police said. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Luellen suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, police said. A 35-year-old woman in his car was also taken to Sherman Hospital, where she’s in critical condition, police said.

Luellen, of Elgin, previously spent 30 months in prison after being convicted in 2012 of aggravated fleeing police while driving 21 mph over the limit, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections website.

Sentences were discharged for his previous convictions, including burglary in 2009, mob action in 2009, theft in 2004, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm in 2002 and reckless discharge of a firearm in 1999, according to the department.
