Couples hope online donations will help them start families

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Couples struggling to have or even adopt children often carry the burden of the cost.

Many have struggled in silence, but now more couples are opening up and turning to websites to help their cause.

Vanessa and Michael Garcia have kept their yearning for a child a secret for many years.

“You go into parties, family functions, 'when are you guys going to have kids?' It's like, 'oh, we're not ready. We're not ready right now,' said Vanessa Garcia. “When all along we've been trying."

The couple has struggled with years of fertility issues and has spent tens of thousands of dollars trying to figure out how to have children of their own.

"You feel ashamed, embarrassed, you know, here I'm a woman. That's what I'm made to do,” said Garcia. “And the hardest thing was having to tell people that."

They turned to Crowdfunding, a way of raising money for a cause on the internet.

The couple is using GoFundMe.com to raise money for a new treatment they feel is their best chance of having a baby. So far, friends and family have been donating to the cause.

"I don't even care how much it is, it's the point that they care enough to the point that it makes them want to donate to us and help us become parents,” Garcia added.

The Garcia’s aren’t alone.

Fatina and Van Wilson recently celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary. They lost their daughter during childbirth about 6 years ago.

“There was times that I felt that I was broken...and I just felt that I wasn't doing what I was supposed to be doing as a woman and as a wife," said Fatina Wilson.

The couple now wants to adopt a child, a lengthy and expensive process. They are also seeking assistance through Crowdfunding.

“It was emotional writing the story. Because it was just talking about everything all over again, but once I got to the end result of it I was like, it was the right decision," said Fatina Wilson.

"She's been through a lot. And I can never experience what she went through, the physical part,” said husband, Van Wilson. “Emotionally it does bother us, but I know that God doesn't make any mistakes. We're prepared."

This type of fundraising is a multi-billion dollar global industry.

$2.7 billion was raised in 2012 and was projected to grow to $5 billion in 2013, according to the Crowdfunding Industry Report by Massolution.
