Riverwalk returns: Chicagoans, tourists flock to Chicago's second shoreline

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - If you are looking for a great place to go on summer vacation, you don't need to go any further than the Chicago River.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to bring people to the Riverwalk, the city's second shoreline. He plans to complete the Riverwalk along the main branch of the Chicago River with a walkway connecting the lakefront with the heart of downtown.

As Mayor Emanuel is committed to finishing the final phases of the $100 million Riverwalk extension project, he has charged CDOT to find creative ways to finance the construction of the remaining six blocks from State to Lake.

While parts of the Riverwalk are still under construction, Chicagoans and tourists alike can still enjoy all that the area has to offer. Runners, joggers, tourists, and foodies can all find something to do along the River.

Some businesses have been operating on the Riverwalk for up to 18 years. Business owners say Memorial Day weekend brought them success - Chicagoans could not wait to head out to the walk and enjoy the scenery.

Visitors can also rent a kayak and travel along the river to see the beautiful views - and you don't have to be an expert to do it. James, who is in charge of the river kayaks says the waters can get rough, but the guided tour option can keep you safe and happy.

One of the most interesting features the Riverwalk has to offer is the Museum on the River, which allows visitors to watch the gears in motion during bridge lifts.

The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016.
