Sunshine and warmth arrive just in time for Memorial Day

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Warm weather made for a picture perfect Memorial Day weekend in Chicago filled with weddings, walks in the park, biking, horseback riding and plenty of people on the lakefront.

“I thought winter was never going to end, so it’s fantastic,” said North Side resident Randy West. He and his family spent the day at 63rd Street Beach. They ended up there because the other beaches they checked out on the North Side were packed.

“You know it’s been kind of cool but we try to make it out here every single day,” said Yahnahton Banyoda, CEO of Yahnahton Productions. He's a drummer whose drum circle often performs near Belly Up Jerk Pit. This year, his drum circle had a late start due to the weather.

“Today was the first nice day. Everybody is coming now. The beach is open so we’re cooking good food at Belly Up on the beach,” said Mark Johnson, owner of Belly Up Jerk Pit.

“I hope it stays. I don’t want any more snow, tell your weatherman,” said Cheretta Longino in an interview with FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis.

Just in case the cool weather returns sooner than anticipated, Chicagoans are soaking up the sunshine now.

FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis reports The Chicago Park District is hosting more than a thousand cultural events in neighborhood parks this summer.
