Good Samaritans Rescue Ducklings From Busy Highway

Posted: Updated:
Houston-TX- Eleven ducklings found themselves on a busy Houston freeway on Thursday. Thankfully, drivers came to their rescue.

It was touch-and-go for the little ducks trying to dodge traffic.

17-year-old Jordon Roe and her mom were among several strangers who risked their own lives to stop along the busy freeway.

"I was like mom, we have to get out, we have to help them. And she was like; we can't just get out onto the freeway," said Jordon Roe.

The Good Samaritans were able to gather up the black-bellied, whistling ducklings and put them in a shoe box.

"There was a point where we actually had to reach under a car to retrieve one of the babies because they were crawling under the cars," said Tonya Gust.

The rescue operation was a group effort.

"Well, we couldn't do it alone. It took all six of us about 5 minutes to get them all into my car," said Stephanie Brajot.

Experts say the ducks are tree ducks and that they jumped out of a tree and ended up on the highway.

Their mother was killed on the roadway. Wildlife experts are now caring for them at the Wildlife Center of Texas.
