Anti-violence Initiative: 'Summer of Faith and Action'

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

With the potential for violence as the holiday weekend begins, Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined with faith and business leaders to promote peace.

The mayor joined residents who gathered in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago’s south side to kick off the "Summer of Faith and Action" initiative. The idea behind the project is to encourage people to gather in their communities for activities that create a safe place for people to be.

“Every child that's out tonight is seeing the city standing shoulder to shoulder with them, ensuring that they have a childhood, free of gun violence and once again reintroduced to the laughter and optimism of childhood,” said Mayor Emanuel.

The Woodlawn event was one of three Friday across the city aimed at promoting a cooperative effort between churches and community leaders to stand against violence.
