Groping incident raises concern in suburban Homer Glen

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Friday night in Homer Glen, the place to be and be seen is the popular sporting center MegaPlex, but one mother says what she saw was no game at all.

"What I really saw was the one boy, that was so tall, he was groping at her boobs, groping at her butt, just really being inappropriate. I asked my friend's daughter who knows them, she said they're ten-years-old," said a suburban mother who asked to remain anonymous to protect the identity of her school-aged son. She says the fondling incident happened on Friday, May 9 inside the MegaPlex.

"I tried to find an adult. I couldn't find any adult people working there, there was a lot of high school students so I didn't know who to contact and I tried calling the MegaPlex and they finally got a hold of me almost a week later. It was really shocking to see what I saw," said the mother.

FOX 32's Tisha Lewis asked MegaPlex manager Chris Gray about the groping incident.

"We investigated with all of our employees that were working on Friday night. All of our employees are adults. A big concern of ours is that parents feel that we are responsible for them dropping off their 8 and 9 year old children," said Gray in a phone interview.

On its website, MegaPlex says it's a training and practice center with a variety of sports including hockey, baseball and soccer. Some say it's better known as the Friday night hangout spot for neighboring students - many of whom are dropped off by their parents.

"I see 13-, 14- and 15-year-olds but there's ten and under that are doing these kind of things and there's even younger kids that are witnessing these things. I think without a lot of adult supervision, they don't really know what their kids are doing," said the mother who asked to remain anonymous.

"Everybody drops their kids off and the whole place is filled with kids and birthday parties and everything," said Melanie Swider, an MegaPlex employee's older sister. Swider says there is adult supervision.

The Will County Sheriff's Office says no reports or complaints were made about MegaPlex in the last two months. The center is just blocks away from Hadley Junior High School where a sexting scandal erupted last month.

"If this type of behavior is going on where parents don't know besides the cell phone, you really need to pay attention to what the kids are doing when they're not around," said the mother who asked to remain anonymous.

MegaPlex says at least half a dozen adult employees are on staff.

FOX 32's Tisha Lewis reports that at least 200 students turn out on Friday nights.
