DETROIT (WJBK) -- A suspect is in custody after a child was critically injured in a hit-and-run earlier this week, according to Detroit police.

Police took the suspect into custody after they located the car involved in the hit-and-run a Detroit car rental business. Police say the surveillance video from the business shows a different person picking up and returning the vehicle.

Eight-year-old Camari Smith was having ice cream from a nearby ice cream truck with a friend when she was hit.

Police say a driver failed to stop at the ice cream truck's stop sign, which was extended with blinking red lights.

Police say the impact sent the girl airborne and knocked her out of her shoes. She is still in critical condition at Children's Hospital.

The incident happened on Robson Street, which is near the intersection of Greenfield Road and Fenkell Street on Detroit's west side.

Police were looking for a silver or gray Dodge Charger, which they say they have in their possession. Police say it is a different vehicle than the one found burned-out one by authorities shortly after the accident.
