ELGIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A northwest suburban was sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to a fatal DUI crash and unrelated charge of selling heroin to an undercover police officer, both in 2012.

Shannon Hill, 19, of the 0-99 block of Poplar Creek Drive in Elgin, pleaded guilty Thursday to failure to report an accident involving death, reckless homicide, and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within a 1,000 feet of a park—all felonies, according to a statement from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s office.

In September 2012, Hill was driving in Kane County at about 100 mph when his vehicle rolled over, killing 17-year-old passenger Lawrence Echols of Elgin, who was riding in the right rear seat, according to prosecutors.

Hill told two other passengers, who were also injured, not to report the crash, then ran away. He was found about nine hours later at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, prosecutors said.

In the other case, in October 2012, Hill sold 1.1 grams of heroin to an undercover Elgin police officer in exchange for a Sony Playstation 3 gaming console, prosecutors said. The trade took place within 1,000 feet of Trout Park.

Hill received a six-year sentence for the failing to report charge, and a five-year sentence for the reckless homicide charge, which will be served consecutively, the statement said. He also received 10 years for delivery of a controlled substance charge, to will be served concurrent to the other sentences.

“This is another sad case of a young person discovering after it is too late that there is great risk and often a great price to pay for impaired driving,” State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said in the statement. “We hope this sentence gives Lawrence Echols’ family a sense of peace and justice.”
