MUNDELEIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are interviewing a person who said he may have been involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a northwest suburban bicyclist on Wednesday, authorities said Friday.

Thursday afternoon, police began a missing person investigation after Carl H. Roderwald, 40, did not return to his Mundelein home Wednesday night, according to a statement from Mundelein police.

He had last been seen at Crossroads Inn about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Police traced his cell phone to the intersection of routes 83 and 176 on Thursday night, the statement said. Officers found his body along with a damaged bicycle in tall grass along Route 83, just north of McRae Lane.

Roderwald, of the 0 to 100 block of Washington Boulevard in Mundelein, was apparently struck by a vehicle that left the scene, police said.

On Friday, a person voluntarily came to Mundelein police and said he may have been involved in the fatal crash, police said. His vehicle, a Ford pickup, is being processed for evidence.

No charges had been filed as of 9 p.m. Friday, though “preliminary indications from the vehicle and driver suggest that this vehicle was involved in the accident,” police said Friday night.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (847) 968-4600.

The Lake County Major Crash Accident Team is assisting in the investigation.
