Police: 3 killed, 4 wounded in Thursday shootings

A 14-year-old boy was one of three people killed along with at least four others wounded in citywide shootings Thursday, police said.

The most recent fatal shooting happened about 10:15 p.m. in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.

Officers who were responding to a call of shots fired found Kevin Diaz, 14, lying unresponsive on the sidewalk in the 6400 block of South Francisco Avenue, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Diaz, who lived two blocks north of where he was shot to death, was pronounced dead less than a half hour later, authorities said.

The shooting is believed to be gang-related, police said.

About 8:45 p.m., Brian McKinney, 20, was standing on the sidewalk in the 10700 block of South Indiana Avenue, when several people walked up and fired shots in his direction, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He suffered gunshot wounds to the arm and hip, and the people then ran away.

McKinney, of the 7300 block of South Perry Avenue, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Earlier Thursday, an 18-year-old man was found dead with a gunshot wound in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Robert Waldon was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds at 1:17 a.m. in the 1300 block of North Hamlin Avenue, authorities said.

Waldon, of the 3800 block of West Grand Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:54 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. He was a documented gang member, police said.

About 8:05 p.m., the boy was walking in the 6300 block of South Artesian Avenue when he was shot in the ankle, police said. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in “stable” condition

Thirty-five minutes earlier, a male, whose age was not immediately known, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg about 7:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of South Yates Boulevard, police said. Hospital information was not available.

Shortly after 6 p.m., a man was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The man, 20, was shot in the lower back in the 12400 block of South Union Avenue, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in “stable” condition.

Less than 30 minutes earlier, a man was shot during an attempted robbery in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood.

The 22-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg about 5:50 p.m. in the 0 to 100 block of East 53rd Street, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in good condition. Police said the shooting happened during an attempted robbery, but additional details were not immediately available.

No one is in custody for any of the shootings as area detectives investigate.
