Suit: Calumet Park hotel infested with bed bugs

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A woman suffered from bed bug bites after she stayed at a Magnuson Hotel in south suburban Calumet Park, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday.

Bridget Flowers rented a hotel room Feb. 14 at the Magnuson Hotel, 12800 S. Ashland Ave., and slept on the bed and used the sheets that the hotel provide, according to the negligence lawsuit filed Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court.

Flowers awoke that evening with red bumps on her body and, upon examination of the room, found live insects on and around the bed, the lawsuit alleges.

She then checked out of her hotel room early and immediately went to Ingalls Urgent Care in Flossmoor, according to the suit.

The lawsuit claims the urgent care physician confirmed to Flowers that the red bumps were bed bug bites.

Flowers suffered from itching, pain, discomfort and embarrassment, and incurred medical expenses and out-of-pocket expenses as a result of the pests’ bites, according to the suit.

The one-count lawsuit claims the hotel negligently and carelessly failed to provide guests with safe and sanitary rooms; failed to take steps, including inspections and extermination, to keep its premises clean and free of infestations; and, among other things, failed to train staff appropriately to recognize signs of bed bugs.

Flowers is seeking at least $50,000 in damages.

The company that owns the hotel, ANJCO 2, LLC, is listed as the defendant in the lawsuit.

Neither a representative from ANJCO 2 nor Magnuson Hotels could be reached for comment on the lawsuit Thursday evening.
