CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Downers Grove, a western suburb of Chicago, has been crowned one of the best places in America to raise a family.

According to, Downers Grove offers great schools, playgrounds and low crime rates. Kids in Downers Grove also have many options for leading a healthy lifestyle and opportunities to engage with other children.

Downers Grove schools are built with neighborhoods around them so that people feel invested in the school system. School officials say the entire district stands out because they focus on the whole child. The Downers Grove school district has a nationally-recognized social-emotional learning curriculum where students learn to assess themselves personally.

"They become lifelong learners. We have a quality instructional program that covers all subject areas and we reach out and cover areas like arts, music, and physical education - not only through traditional methods, but we have innovative technology we're infusing into that curriculum," they say.

The Downers Grove High School board president said that curriculum helps students when they go on to high school and a citizen in the community.

School leaders also say two thirds of school children in the coming year will need to have at least one technology in their classrooms.

Another reason Downers Grove is a a great place to raise a family is their stellar library that is a 'destination for all ages.' The library has been a mainstay of the city for over 100 years and it is one of the busiest, most popular libraries in the region.

"We're making the building more pleasant, fresh, but mostly emphasizing technology and new ways people are using libraries today," library officials told FOX 32's Joanie Lum.

It's not just a quiet zone, but a fun zone as well.

Downers Grove was ranked number two on the list, topped only by Boise. Livability took a look at cities with high concentrations of school-age children and how their schools stacked up. They then and analyzed factors like childhood mortality rates, health insurance coverage, crime rates and the percentage of restaurants that feature kids’ menus.
