1 killed, 12 wounded in Wednesday gun violence

A man was killed and at least twelve other people were wounded in citywide shootings Wednesday.

The fatal shooting happened about 12:25 p.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Two men, ages 38 and 40, were shot in the chest in the 700 block of North Springfield Avenue, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. A friend drove the men to Norwegian American Hospital, police said.

Lewis Jenkins, 38, of the 1000 block of North Lockwood Avenue, was shot in the chest and was later pronounced dead at the hospital at 12:40 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The 40-year-old remained hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday evening, police said.

The most recent non-fatal shooting happened about 11:45 p.m. in the Pilsen neighborhood.

The 23-year-old was walking on the sidewalk in the 1700 block of West 18th Street about 11:45 p.m. when a dark colored sedan drove up and someone inside fired shots, police said.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to his leg, police said.

Police said the man is a documented gang member.

About 15 minutes earlier, a man was shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.

The man was walking on the sidewalk in the 8500 block of South Carpenter Street about 11:30 p.m. whne he “heard shots and felt pain,” police said. The man, who is a documented gang member, was taken in good condition to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park with a gunshot wound to the buttocks.

About 11 p.m., two men were wounded on the South Side.

They were on a sidewalk in the 6200 block of South King Drive when someone walked up and fired shots, police said.

A 32-year-old man was shot in the face and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious condition, and a 39-year-old was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in “stable” condition with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to police.

About 15 minutes earlier, a man was shot in the Washington Heights neighborhood on the South Side.

The 32-year-old man was walking in the 1200 block of West 97th Street about 10:45 p.m. when he was shot, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in “stable” condition with gunshot wounds to the lower left leg and lower back.

Police said the man is a documented gang member.

Just after 9 p.m. in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side, a 22-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were shot while sitting on a porch in the 10000 block of South Princeton Avenue, police said.

A black SUV pulled up nearby, someone exited the vehicle and fired shots, hitting him in the arm and her in the thigh, police said.

The man was taken to Roseland Community Hospital and the woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Both were in “stable” condition, police said.

About two hours earlier, a man was shot in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The 28-year-old was walking past an alley about 7 p.m. in the 5200 block of West Oakdale Avenue when he saw someone firing shots toward him from the alley, police said.

The man ran about a block before he realized he had been shot in the leg. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in “stable” condition, police said.

Earlier, a South Side shooting left a 32-year-old man critically wounded and a 37-year-old woman injured.

The shooting happened about 5:20 p.m. in the 9100 block of South Throop Street, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Christ with gunshot wounds to the chest and back, and she was treated at the scene in “stable” condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The day’s first shooting happened at 8:51 a.m. in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

A 26-year-old was shot in the thigh in the 8200 block of South Kedzie Avenue and taken to Christ in “stable” condition, police said.

No one is in custody for any of the shootings as detectives investigate.
