Weekend event a 'gold mine' for sneaker fanatics

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Some people collect stamps, cars or photographs - this weekend, shoe collectors wheeled and dealed in Chicago to get kicks worth thousands of dollars.

“A lot of people like collecting other stuff. I like collecting shoes,” Diego Lemley said.

SneakerCon Chicago at the Broadway Park Armory is one of the largest shoe sales in the country. It is a gold mine for sneaker collectors.

Some people came from all corners of the country to attend the Saturday event that puts more than 16,000 different pairs of sneakers under one roof.

“It is our son’s twelfth birthday and it was his dream to come to SneakerCon this weekend, so we flew here from Portland,” one visitor told FOX 32’s Natalie Bomke.

More than 200 vendors and regular people alike looked to pawn their kicks to the highest bidder.

It’s not about finding the shoe that fits, but the pair that can fetch the most money. It is a land where limited editions, funky colors and older models are your best bet.

“There are a lot of sneakerheads, it is a growing culture,” Jamaine Collins said.

The most expensive pair of sneakers at this year’s SneakerCon was going for $7,000.
