CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 4-year-old Merrillville boy is dead after his parents’ handgun went off, according to a press release from Merrillville police.

Officers arrived at the home in the 6400 block of Cleveland street Saturday morning and found the boy unresponsive with a gunshot to the head, the release said.

The Lake County Coroner’s office was called to Methodist Hospital Southlake in Merrillville where they pronounced Cash Irby Jr., 4, dead from a gunshot wound to the head at 8:47 a.m., according to a press release from the Lake County Coroner’s office. The cause of death was ruled accidental.

The Merrillville Police press release said the boy took the gun from his parents’ bedroom and went back to his room with the gun, where it discharged.

Both parents and two siblings, ages 4 and 1, were home at the time, police said.

Merrillville Commander Jeff Rice is investigating.
