WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago rapper Chief Keef made a brief appearance Friday in Lake County Circuit, where his attorney successfully requested a continuance for a Highland Park DUI arrest.

On a motion from defense attorney Leah Starkman, Judge Joseph Waldeck continued the case to June 27. Waldeck said the rapper, whose real name is Keith Cozart, is not able to drive due to a suspension of his license in April, the Lake County News-Sun is reporting.

Cozart has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of marijuana. He was charged under a municipal ordinance and is being prosecuted by Highland Park rather than the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

He was pulled over about 12:40 a.m. March 5 in the 2600 block of Skokie Valley Road after officers noticed he had an expired registration on his 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said. Officers who approached the car reported that Cozart appeared impaired by drugs, and that they could smell burnt marijuana coming from inside of his car, according to police reports.

Cozart failed a sobriety test and was taken into custody.

He was charged with one count each of driving under the influence of drugs, driving without a valid driver’s license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and having an expired registration.

Prior to his Highland Park arrest, Cozart had spent time in California serving a 90-day court-mandated rehab sentence after he pleaded guilty last year to testing positive for drugs while on probation.

Legal trouble and tragedy seem to have thrust Keef’s name into the spotlight more than music has recently. Cozart’s cousin Mario Hess, known as rapper Big Glo, was killed in April when he was shot on the South Side.
