CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Something's not right with the weather when a week before Chicago's beaches open for Memorial Day weekend, those going for walks nearby are wearing winter hats.

“My lips, my lips, I can't even move my lips right now,” said Henry Haer, visiting from Melbourne Beach, Florida. “I don't know how you guys live in this.”

And don't even think of swimming anytime soon, Lake Michigan’s shoreline temperatures are on 53 degrees, seven degrees colder than usual.

On a day when snow fell in the northern suburbs, today’s high struggled to reach 45. It’s usually 70 degrees on May 16th.

Luis Sales, traveled to Chicago for a wedding this weekend and was counting on much nicer weather. Instead, as walked back from the lake at North Avenue beach he reflected on the rawness in the air.

“Well it's cold, very cold and wet,”Sales said.

It was perfect baseball weather for those attending the Cubs game. Or maybe, not based on all the empty seats.

“You see your breath in May, it's pretty cold, it's ridiculous,” said Tim Handler, visiting from Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

And don't even get fans started on how they had to dress, there might have been more winter gear than Cubs wear at this game.

“I was expecting it to be warm today, I got tickets a month ago, I thought it was going to be warm,” said Cubs fan Lou Scannicchio, one of many who left early.

And those who planned the Riverfront Mayfest sure were counting on better weather, and a better crowd. So were music fans like Amy Depwe, who had ear grip, boots and her winter parka on. It was not the wardrobe she planned to wear.

“I thought it would be warm enough for open toed shoes,” Depwe said.

And many were huddled under the heating mushrooms trying to stay warm.

“Gotta stand under the mushroom, however, a couple of these,” said Zak Friedman, holding up his beer, “and everything warms up.”

Let’s hope Chicago does, and soon.
