Proposed project would expand Oak Street beach

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There's a new proposal in the city to expand Oak St. Beach by 60 acres and run Lake Shore Drive in a tunnel underneath.

The proposed project would cost the city $177 million to overhaul the Lake Front from Olive Park to North Avenue Beach. Part of that would include the area known as the "S curve." Those in favor of the proposal want to straighten out that stretch of road that many drivers run into.

Residents who live near the Drake Hotel say they often look out their windows and see accidents and people slamming into the barrier wall at the S curve. They say the proposed project is a great idea.

In order to revamp the road, part of the drive would need to be buried underground. During a public meeting with residents, an architectural firm explained they would create 1.2 miles of additional shoreline by building our into Lake Michigan.

But some Streeterville residents the area would would not have enough green space.

Officials are hoping to receive federal funds for the proposed project. If approved, they say the project could take four to five years to begin.
