WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A northwest Indiana man and former Riverdale fire captain who collapsed during a parade in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday is in critical condition but expected to recover, thanks to the quick response of nearby emergency personnel.

Lito Lemus has been a member of the Lake County Pipes and Drums Unit for three years, and underwent emergency surgery Wednesday night, Lake County police spokeswoman Patti VanTil said Thursday.

The Pipes and Drums team was leading the parade at the annual National Law Enforcement Memorial services when Lemus, of Schererville, suffered an apparent heart attack, the Post-Tribune is reporting. First responders in the area administered CPR until an ambulance arrived, Van Til said.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich praised the emergency personnel, saying, “It was a good cooperative effort in assisting Mr. Lemus at the scene. There were many individuals present with emergency training who quickly responded. Consequently the outcome appears to be positive.”

Lemus, 62, is also a former captain at the south suburban Riverdale Fire Department, officials said.
