Chinatown's secret menus

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Call it a culinary barrier. North of Grand Street, Chinese food takes a different meaning. Something with broccoli, for instance, counts as Chinese food there, Gen. whoever's chicken apparently is popular as well. South of Grand Street, however, is there a secret menu?

To Chan is the owner of Big Wong, an institution on Mott Street for over 35 years now. He says he gets two kinds of customers: those who need a little help navigating and locals who know exactly what they want.

Andy Ha's family spot Nha Trang on Baxter has been here for two and a half decades. We put the question to him bluntly: is there a secret menu in Chinatown? He says yes.

Ordering off-menu is no secret in any culture. Even actors feel more special having something the rest of the customers aren't getting. There are two simple ways to get the best culinary bites out of Chinatown: go with somebody who knows how to order or ask the people who work there what are the most authentic dishes.

The Hess triangle is a tiny piece of private property in Greenwich Village. Manhattan historian Joyce Gold explained the origins of the property: After World War I, New York City seized a beautiful residence and tore it down so it could extend Seventh Avenue and the west side subway below it. The city left the building's owner only a tiny scrap of property so small it requested he donate the triangle to make way for a sidewalk. The man refused, took the city to court and won.
