Farmers market season kicks off in Chicago

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Farmers Market season is open in Chicago, making many vegetables and herbs available from local sources.

Organizers with the Green City Market set up their stand Wednesday morning in Lincoln Park. Mark Psilos, the associate director of the Green City Market says his stand is distinct for a number of reasons.

"We are one of the only markets in the country that requires all vendors to have a third party certification so they can be USDA organic or animal welfare approved. All vendors must obtain a certificate from a third party that certifies their agricultural practices and commitment," Psilos said.

This year, the market has more than 65 vendors.

Several unique items can be found at the market - wild nettles, wild mustard greens, green garlic and local honey can all be purchased. Everything sold is within 300 miles of the city, on average products come from within 150 miles of the city.

Organizers say local honey is great for those who suffer from allergies.

Another attribute that sets the Green City Market apart is the fact they recycle all of their waste.

The waste is separated by compost, paper products and compostable plastics and then distributed accordingly.

"The recycling, we have glass, clean cardboard, and plastic cups. Metal we do the same as you would do at home. And really, that does not leave us with a lot for landfills, just certain plastics that are not recyclable," Psilos explained.

One visitor told FOX 32's Joanie Lum they have been visiting the market for 15 years.

The city hosts 25 farmers markets. This year, the list includes some new locations. Click here to view a list of some farmers markets going on around town.
