LA GRANGE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was hit and killed by a Metra train while trying to cross railroad tracks near a station in west suburban La Grange Tuesday evening.

Lawrence Brigel, 66, was struck about 7:25 p.m. by outbound BNSF line train No. 1287 near the La Grange Road station, authorities said.

Police believe the man, who walks with a cane, was attempting to cross the tracks, and was not able to get out of the way once he realized the express train was approaching, said La Grange Police Sgt. Marge Kielczynski.

Pedestrian gates and warning lights were activated and working properly, Kielczynski said.

Brigel, of the 400 block of Ashland Avenue in La Grange, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Trains toward Aurora and Chicago were stopped for about an hour and a half after the incident, according to Metra.
