Darien cake decorating school attracts international students

DARIEN, Ill. (FOX 32 News) - Reality shows about cake decorating have started a do-it-yourself trend in the home. Students from around the world have been packing classrooms to learn the tricks of the trade.

The Wilton Method of cake decorating is celebrating 85 years this year. The popularity of cake decorating began many years ago, but the trend continues to grow with the millenial generation because of sites like Pinterest and Facebook.

Classes were packed Tuesday at the world famous Wilton School of Cake Decorating in Darien. The high-tech classrooms feature all the baking and design tools, as well as a video system that shows students different angles.

Sandra Folsom spoke with FOX 32's Joanie Lum about the classes offered at the school. And Folsom said you don't have to be a baker or a cake decorator to take the class.

"We have had students from 105 different places. This particular session, we have somebody from Haiti, Canada, Bermuda and Bahamas. Some people come for a change of career, some just for the fun of it," Folsom said.

She says with time, the students will be able to make fancy cakes seen on displays.

"That's why they come to the Wilton School," she went on to say.
