On Monday, Metra announced that it has hired veteran of the Illinois State Police Department Joseph M. Perez to serve as chief of the Metra Police Department.

Perez will help lead the transformation of Metra security into a modern and efficient force. Most recently he was the Commander of the State Police Region 1, where he supervised police activities as well as 800 sworn officers and civilians in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and DeKalb counties.

“I am confident that Chief Perez is the right man for the job,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno. “He has the experience and background we need to transform the department so that it is better prepared to ensure the safety and security of riders, staff, assets and infrastructure.”

Perez’s career began as a state trooper in 1986 and he has steadily risen through the ranks since. He has held the positions of Sergeant, Master Sergeant, General Criminal Squad supervisor, Director of the North Central Narcotics Task Force, Lieutenant, Commander Lieutenant, Captain of District 15 and Major/Commander of Region 1.

Perez also served on the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force Board of Directors, the Chicago High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Executive Board, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Illinois State Police Rifle Committee, the McHenry County Terrorism Planning Committee and the Illinois State Police Glock Transition Team.

Perez was an instructor at the State Police Academy as well. He taught criminal law, search and seizure, officer safety and firearms. He has also earned many awards and has been recognized for his work dedication. He is active in many police associations, which includes the National Governors Security Association, the International Association of the Chiefs of Police and the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.

Perez has been married for 24 years and has three children. He lives in McHenry.
